Take an App Approach

If you could keep from bruising your knuckles or breaking your back when you’re doing PMCS or equipment repairs, you’d jump at the chance. You’d probably want to know all about a tool that helps protect you while making you more proficient and efficient in doing your job.

There is such a tool, but it might fool you at first. It’s a magazine and it’s small – but it’s one heck of a tool.

Let’s think about that nut, tube, or other component that needs replacing. You’ve dug through a dog-eared tech manual, finally found the national stock number (NSN), and you’ve got it ordered. But the requisition comes back unfilled. That NSN is a terminal item and it’s out-of-stock.

What the heck? How can you fix stuff when the Army no longer supplies the part? PS, The Preventive Maintenance Monthly, that handy little magazine, is the tool you need. The probability is that PS Magazine has already published a story about the NSN being terminal and has provided the new NSN you should be using instead.

Or maybe some other Soldiers have noticed a part that gets overlooked in PMCS, but keeps other parts from working right when it fails. That puts your vehicle at risk of fire, damage, or loss. PS lets you know what to look for.

Maybe there’s a new MWO out that you haven’t heard about yet. PS has probably written about it, telling readers where to find the MWO and who’s going to do it!

Now, PS Magazine has been retooled just for you. In addition to the monthly printed magazine that’s been available to units since 1951, PS is now available as a mobile app for both Apple and Android tablets and phones.

We’ve included static PDF issues from 2014 through February 2016, but the issues from March 2016 forward are interactive. Videos are attached to links in some articles, some articles link to photographs of equipment components, a link to our website allows access to our search engine covering all articles dating back to 2000. Additional videos are available on our Resources link for use as individual learning or team training material. The Hot Topics link allows PS to get late-breaking information to you concerning your equipment. Maybe a specific part needs to be checked immediately to avoid equipment breakdown, or there’s an urgent need for an unserviceable part so it can be repaired and put back into the supply system.

PS, The Preventive Maintenance Monthly is an official Army technical bulletin, but it uses color, sequential art (cartoon art) techniques, and equipment illustrations to provide you current information approved by equipment proponents.

PS is the information tool that needs to be in your toolbox and now on your tablet or phone. Use these QR codes or the following URL addresses to get the App and download the magazine:

Maintenance Management . . .MMIS Revamps User Roles

If you use the Modification Management Information System (MMIS) in the Logistics Information Warehouse (LIW), chances are you’ve noticed several changes over the last few years.

The improvements continue. MMIS has been updated to make it more user- friendly, efficient and responsive.

All existing MMIS capabilities are still available.   If you already have an approved MMIS role in LIW, the transition will be seamless. There’s no need to submit a new user request.

However, as part of the latest update, MMIS roles were revamped and are more descriptive and comprehensive.

There are now four roles available to customers: MMIS Basic, MMIS Reporter (replaced MMIS Supervisor), MMIS Commodity Manager (replaced MMIS LCMC), and MMIS Depot.

The MMIS Basic role is included in LIW basic permissions. This read-only role lets the user view compliance/ reporting status, as well as published messages.

The MMIS Reporter role allows the user to enter confirmation and completion information for modification and safety messages, in addition to the permissions granted to the Basic role.

The MMIS Commodity Manager role allows the user to enter materiel change number (MCN) information and monitor the message library, and includes the permissions from MMIS Basic and MMIS Reporter roles. This role is restricted to commodity managers.

The MMIS Depot role allows the user to perform mass updates of equipment, receiving modifications at the depot level in addition to the permissions included in MMIS Basic and MMIS Reporter. This role is restricted to select personnel at depot level.

Submit requests for any of the above roles by going to:

https://liw.logsa.army.mil/

Click New User Registration, then on the next screen choose the “My Permissions” tab. Search for MMIS in the Keyword Search box. Select the role you want and give appropriate justification in the explanation field.

Logistics Management . . .Downloadable FED LOG Saves Army Dollars

Good news! FED LOG is now available as a downloadable product from the Defense Logistics Agency’s (DLA) Logistics Information Service.

FED LOG has been offered on CD-ROM/DVDs for many years. But that means hard copy discs have to be mailed to subscribers. Now   Soldiers and Department of the Army civilians can download FED LOG free without a subscription. No more waiting on discs!

Two downloadable FED LOG versions are available: “Complete” and “Lite.” The complete version has the same info found on the standard CD-ROM/DVD. The lite version is about half the size of the complete one, so it downloads quicker. Another difference is that the lite version doesn’t include product characteristics, CAGE codes or history data.

FED LOG discs will still be offered via the regular subscription process through the Logistics Support Activity’s (LOGSA) Logistics Integrated Warehouse (LIW) portal using the FED LOG icon.

Additionally, customers can still view FED LOG without a subscription via the LIW portal. Select App Warehouse, click on the FED LOG icon, and then press the “Go to Application” button.

To access LIW, go to:

https://liw.logsa.army.mil/

First-time users will need to submit a System Access Request (SAR).

However, downloadable versions offer substantial cost savings for the Army. So to help the Army stretch its budget, if you’re a current FED LOG subscriber, make sure to cancel your disc subscription before you download a new version.

In the LIW portal, choose the FED LOG Addressing System button (FEDLOG ADDR), log in to your account and submit a cancellation. If you don’t already have this button showing on your portal, add it from the App Warehouse first.

Then download FED LOG from the Department of Defense’s Electronic Mall (DOD EMALL) website. For EMALL access, information and account registration, go to:

https://dod.emall.dla.mil/

For EMALL help, call 1-877-352-2255 (CONUS), (269) 961-7766 (OCONUS), or email:
